The Higher Education Finding Council has set a sector wide target to reduce carbon emissions by 43%. This is based on a 2005 baseline consumption.
Each institution is then expected to set its own target to reduce carbon emissions from its operations in support of this sector targets
Progress against institution targets will be monitored annually by HEFCE and performance will be linked to future finding for the institution.
Within the Bloomsbury Colleges, the institutions have made a commitment to reduce their carbon emissions by 43% in 2020, consistent with the HEFCE sector target.
It is important to note that since 2005, the carbon emissions from the institutions have increased meaning that against current consumption levels the target is even higher.
Carbon emissions are currently calculated based on energy use, travel, and direct emissions. These are known as scope 1. In the future this will be expanded to include other factors such as waste and lifecycle of products.
