There was also a Farmers Market Talk, a great Second-hand Sale led by the Student Green Group; the Police were there doing Secure Bike Marking and the Cycle Surgery Safety Checks helped staff and students get their bikes running like a dream.

The Greenthing team hosted a Recycling Game; a Fairtrade Quiz and tasting session; and even a Recycled Art Workhop. Our drinks can frog looks great! We are going to be taking him on tour around the colleges over the next year so look out for him in your college.
In the Recycling Game, the aim was to throw the waste items into the correct bin. There were some trick items in there which caught lots of people out - Jiffy envelopes where you can recycle only if you take the bubble wrap out for example. Most people did a great job of guessing the correct bin which shows that we do know what to do with our waste so it begs the question why we are not using the correct bins around the college. The main difficulty people seemed to have was in throwing it into the bin but that was more aim than understanding.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to all of the staff and students who gave up their time to support the event. This included putting up posters (and taking them down again); setting up the stands; running the recycling game; and hosting the Second-hand sale. The event really could not have been such a great success without your help so to say thanks we are giving every volunteer a Greenthing reusable takeaway mug and, for those who would like it for their CV, a certificate to show that they were a valued member of the team on the day.
To round of the days activities, Birkbeck hosted a Fairtrade night in the Student Union bar, the George. This was really popular and managed to raise over £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation.
